  1. Description: The White House and South Lawn. This side is more attractive in my opinion, and has better lighting. The White House has been the official residence of the U.S. President since 1801. It was built in 1792-1800. It was burned by the British army in the War of 1812, mostly rebuilt by 1817, and expanded in the 1820s. President Truman added the balcony to the south portico in 1947. The White House was gutted, given a new framework, and rebuilt over several years, beginning in 1948.
